Niagara
Parks Botanical Gardens:
The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens was originally established in 1936 as the
School for Apprentice Gardeners. It remains a unique location for studying gardening
and obtaining the knowledge necessary to grow and maintain the landscapes of the
Park System. With an increase in magnitude and quality of the plant collections,
the school campus was officially declared a Botanical Garden in 1990. Since 1936,
horticultural excellence has been the emphasis of The School of Horticulture.
The training program is designed to enable all students to obtain practical experience
by daily participation in horticultural activities. The students are responsible
for the maintenance and development of the Botanical Gardens.
In addition, an intensive classroom lecture schedule is designed to provide students
with a sound basic knowledge of horticultural theory. The mission of the Botanical
Gardens is to train students in the art, mystery and science of horticulture while
providing opportunities for visitor enjoyment, study and research. The Gardens
are open to visitors for a self guided tour of the plant world as seen in the
herb garden, the vegetable garden, the rock garden or the splendid arboretum,
embracing one of Canada's finest collections of ornamental trees and shrubs. During
summer montsh, visitors may also book a guided half hour tour with the Nature
Interpreter for a fee of $3.00 per person or schedule a group tour. The group
tour should be booked in advance. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens are truly
an enriching experience for all seasons. This attraction is open daily dawn to
dusk year round. Parking and admittance to the grounds is FREE.
